Lupita Nyong'o Speech on Black Beauty Essence Black Women #BringBackOurGirls

These are the fantastic words of wisdom given to Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o by her mother when Lupita was a young girl, struggling with her self-esteem in a world in which beauty is often defined in the media by the color of one’s skin. Just a couple of things to note, in case you aren’t sure of what is being referred to in her speech:

  • When the young girl in the opening letter refers to Whitenicious cream, she is referring to a skin lightening cream used to lighten the tone of one’s skin.

  • Near the end of her speech, when Lupita refers to Patsey, she is referring to the Oscar winning role she played in the movie 12 Years a Slave.
