You Can Succeed Just By Being Yourself

If you think that you have to look or act a certain way to succeed, then this is a great video for you. In it, the hugely successful artist Adele, answers questions about whether she worries that she doesn’t fit the ‘mold’ of a successful singer. (spoiler alert – the answer is NO).

If you, like my daughter, are a young girl addicted to music videos, it would be easy to get the impression that the only way to succeed in the music business is by dressing in very revealing outfits and performing in a very sexual way. This isn’t how all female singers perform, but certainly enough that you can very easily get the message that a female singer’s best asset is not her voice.

This post though isn’t a judgement on how female artists dress in the music business- completely the opposite. This is a piece about doing exactly what you are comfortable with – about being true to who you are and pursuing your dreams on your own terms. As long as your terms don’t hurt anyone else, then you should have no one to answer to but yourself.

Unfortunately though, what can sometimes happen is that a girl may become discouraged from pursuing something that she likes (like singing) if she feels that she doesn’t ‘look’ the part or is not comfortable performing in a certain way.

That’s why I think this is such an inspiring interview – if only as one small example of how you can achieve your dreams and remain true to yourself.
